It was the SARS period. Jobs are scarce, but I have no difficulties getting myself a full time job after I graduated in 2002. Just that the pay was not ideal. I started my 1st job as an event coordinator. My pay was as low as $1300 per month, and I have to put in lots of long hours and hard work to secure my job as the hotel is axing staff. All my colleagues and I were in tremendous stress and constant pressure by our department director. After being there for 2 years, I was given an opportunity to work in a shipping company. I decided to switch my career as this hotel job did not adjust my pay to the rightful one even though the economy has turn for the better. In the shipping company, my job scope was totally different. I was the only HR executive for the whole company. I am in a position where I need to understand how the bosses view things, and have to understand how the workforces feel about their job, sandwich in between the 2 levels. Though I was holding quite an important position in my company, the pay I am holding is very low. I am not very concerned about money at that point of time. To me, money can be earned as long as I work for it. I am quite happy go lucky thus as long as I am happy and feels good, no matter how much I earn, I am ok with it. In Dec 2005, my dad came to me for help for money. It was just $2000 but yet I could not even fork out for him. It struck hard on me. What have I been doing all this years? Why did I not have any savings? This caught me thinking. My dad had a stroke before, my mum is getting old and is feeling sick and achy once in awhile. If I am going to get the pay I am getting throughout, will I be able to afford to take care of my parents when they are older. I am the only child in the family, I need to take care of them. The thought of not having enough money really make me panic. Jim is a good friend of mine and was also my insurance agent. He is always so jovial, seems to be enjoying his job a lot and also earning good money from it. He always tell me about his organization, his colleague, the countries he had been to since joining his line. He had also once shown me his bank account to tell me how much he gotten only for half a month of his salary. I was amazed but I have no interest in his job at that point of time. I told Jim about my problems. He told me that it will be an ongoing issue if I do not make any changes in my life. I thought of changing job as I was also not happy working there as I felt very sandwiched. He told me to consider his organization/ job. He told me that since I want to change job, I should give his career a thought. If I do make it in this career, I will be able to earn better for my family. I do not need to struggle with my pay monthly. If I can’t make it, I just lose few months of my life and go back to my hotel line to work. . I am a diploma holder. The most I can get with my experience and qualification was about $3000. I went for the base camp organized by Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®) that Jim asked me to attend as he say it will help me understand more about what I want in life and get to know his organization more. I am glad I went for this camp. During this camp, I met a lot of people. Managers, advisers, and people like me who wants to know more. The managers and advisers are very friendly and welcoming. They chat with me and make me feel comfortable. The most important of all is they are all very young and are very successful. I was very amazed at their achievements and some of them are even younger than me. After the games and introduction, we were told that Peter Tan, the chairman of Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®), their organisation head will be coming to get to know us more. Wow! My thoughts are like: “Peter Tan is the chairman of the organisation, and he takes time to come down to get to know us more? We are nobody to him but he is willing to take his time to come all the way to tanah merah to meet us.” I am very impressed by this gesture as the past few companies I worked for does not practice such culture. There will be a few levels of management before we get to meet the chairman. He even sat on the floor with us throughout the time he spent with us in the base camp. During this time, he shared with us his beliefs, the organization culture, and also teaches us how to set our goals. He helped us to see what we can do and achieved in our life. He also helped me to see how important my family meant to me. I did not know how much I love my mum and dad until I met him. That day onwards, I am very sure that I want to join Peter Tan as I want to learn from him. He is as humble as a chairman could ever been and a mentor that I want to learn from and look up to. Finally after a long time from taking my financial exams, I became an advisor in Sept 2006. I was put into groups to work in. Training was provided for newcomers to learn. Motivation and mentorship were given whenever I needed it. During the end year period, lots of motivation and incentives were given to hype up the whole organization! I was very motivated. No matter how much long hours I worked, how much things I have to learn, I am very happy as there are a group of people running the same goal as me. And I know that the more effort I put in, the more rewards I get. It will be pay off. This career in Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®) sets no limits. I am really glad that I have joined Peter Tan Organisation (PTO®). I do not know where and what I am doing without the constant support that I received from here. Visit me @ petertan.com.sg Julia
